Why move a piano through the window?

A piano is heavy, tall and fragile. On a narrow or winding staircase it has to be tilted and carried by hand, with a risk of damaging the piano, the walls and the carriers’ backs. The building’s lift is often too small or not allowed for moves.

With the piano lift, the piano, protected beforehand, is placed on the platform. It goes gently up the façade to the window or balcony: less handling, fewer knocks, less effort.

Which pianos can go on the lift?

Every request is assessed on quote. We need the piano’s model, weight and dimensions, and the width of the window or balcony.

TypeUsual weight (approx.)With the Ôlift.be lift
Digital piano, stage piano20 to 80 kgYes
Upright piano150 to 300 kgYes, if it weighs no more than 300 kg and fits through the opening
Grand piano (baby grand, etc.)250 to 500 kg and moreAfter assessment: only if the weight, prepared for transport, stays under 300 kg

Important: the platform’s maximum load is 300 kg. We never exceed it. The weight is often in the manual, on the manufacturer’s website or on a label at the back of the piano.

How does a piano lift work? 5 steps

  1. Quote: send us the address, floor, piano model and weight, and a photo of the window or balcony. You receive a free written quote.
  2. Street space: the request to occupy the public road is made with the municipality (or via OSIRIS in Brussels); allow at least 10 m in front of the façade. See our parking permit guide.
  3. Preparation (by the client): protect the piano (blankets, film, straps), close and lock the keyboard lid, remove anything on top of the piano and clear the way to the window.
  4. On the day: our operator sets up and runs the lift. Your carriers bring the piano to the platform and secure it.
  5. Up or down: the platform moves slowly along the façade; your carriers receive the piano on arrival.
